my advice to interns

If you are currently doing your internship or planning to do it soon, here are few advices that will help you make the most out of your internship:

Understand that internship is not only about getting your hands dirty. You won’t become an expert on something in 3 months. Internship is about building your career foundation, gaining a “real world” perspective on an occupation, culture of workplace & organization structure, how the company works, and how operations run.

Prove yourself early and gain trust, follow instructions, pay attention to details, & care about quality.

Build your network inside the company and outside. Get to know everyone especially those at the top. Make them remember you. Relationship matters the most.

Take your work seriously, stay focused and don’t make mistakes. If you made one, don’t cover up, handle it correctly, and that starts by taking responsibility & fix it.

Manage your expectations. Don’t expect to be working & managing big projects. It is an internship, sometimes you get a chance, sometimes you don’t.

Learn from other co-workers, ask them about their career life, the pros & cons, how they are doing in it, what it takes to succeed.

Dress for what you want to be. Be, look & act like a professional. Like it or not, the way you look plays a major role in how people perceive you.

Seek feedback and improve. Ask for advices & apply them.
