What Matters The Most in The First 5 Years of Your Career

To all fresh grads and young professionals out there, here is what you should do in the first 5 years of your career:

Don’t settle for the money in your first 4-5 years of career. Go for the experience, it lasts with you forever, money won’t last for few months after you get laid off.

What Matters The Most in The First 5 Years of Your Career

When I say go for the experience, I am not talking about technical experience only. Learn as much as you can about your field, excel in it, but also learn about other things, cultivate other skills. Skills that sometimes have nothing to do with your current job. And don’t ask me why, because trust me, one day you gonna need it.

Don’t feel so comfortable and confident about your job security. No matter how big the company you are in is, one day when they feel they are not making money, they will get rid of you, no matter how good you are. I have seen that many times.

When that day comes, the other things you have learnt, the other skills you have cultivated will be the only tangible thing you have.

Be smart and work on what matters the most for your future.
