People Buy EV Because of Incentives, not That They Care about Environment

by Alahdal A. Hussein

The chart above shows electric vehicles’ market share for selected countries and how Norway seems to be leading the way in the transition to zero emission vehicles and renewable energy.

The first thing would come to mind when looking at the chart above is that people really care about the environment over there, until you realize that governments in these countries have introduced substantial packages of incentives to promote zero emission vehicles into the market.

For example, in Norway, EV owners have:

  1. No purchase/import taxes
  2. Exemption from 25% VAT on purchase
  3. No annual road tax
  4. No charges on toll roads or ferries (50% off)
  5. Free municipal parking (50% off)
  6. Fiscal compensation for scrapping of fossil vans when converting to a zero emission van
  7. And many more

Not only that, but they also imposed higher taxes on fossil fueled vehicles to discourage Pepe from buying them.

All the above make you wonder whether the transition to zero emission is happening because people care about environment or because they care about saving money by taking advantage of such incentives.

The worst part about it is, what will happen should such incentives are removed???
